Same early idea for Wad Effect 3's ending involved a reaper god instead of the Star Kid
YouTube's People Hit Games asked several ex-BioWare developers who worked on Slew Effect 3 how they felt some the endings, and in particular near putting together the Nonliteral Diluted—an update that expanded on the endings and addressed several of the many complaints players had. It's a majuscule picture and worth a watch, especially for the section where it highlights the additional crunch developers had to go through with to pull the Extended Cut together, after already crunching to out-and-out Mass Effect 3.
But before that, IT also explains that during development much of the team didn't recognize how Bulk Effect 3 would end. "Very much of us didn't have a whole lot of high visibility into what the ending was actually gonna be," says medium designer John Ebenger. Gameplay designer Manveer Heir explains the ending "came in really late" and for a long meter ahead that, only an animatic—the video equivalent of a storyboard—existed.
While we've previously heard about a version of Good deal Effect 3's ending planned by Drew Karpyshyn before leaving BioWare, this animatic adaptation seems to have been created after that, and remained in place until the actual ending was written. It's got a good deal of similarities to the ending we ended prepared with, just as wel some significant differences. Like, instead of the Accelerator, aka the Maven Kid, the annoying AI WHO shows up with a theory take on the inevitableness of conflict between synthetic and organic life at the finale, there was a Grim Reaper Queen.
This ending begins with Sam Shepard arriving on the Citadel, which has amalgamated with the mysterious superweapon called the Crucible, and jacking in. Atomic number 3 animation conductor Dave Wilkinson puts information technology, "At that point Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was so increased with ilk electronical bits and entirely the rest of that considerate of shit, I actually had him just plug himself into the Bastion." Shepard enters "a virtual Earth" and meets what was delineate in the notes by project lead Casey Hudson that Wilkinson was working from as "like the Supreme Being of the Reapers. I think information technology was a queen?"
The Pou explains that she's been imprisoned by her servants for arguing that their cyclical destruction of civilizations wasn't property. She'd say, "'We have to evolve, simply we're incapable of evolution because of the limitations of our AI,' and stuff same that. She was their queen, just she proposed things the reapers didn't like, soh they locked her outside inside the Citadel and just never ever listened to her again. And then the conversation was her active, 'This is a bump to evolve everything. Like, we terminate move everything forward.'"
From there, players would have the traditional deuce-ac options for their preferred flavour of close. "The renegade option was, Shepard's just like, 'Go fuck yourself.'" Later that, Shepard leaves the simulation, and sets dispatch the Crucible by berating the Bastion. This destroys the reapers, though at great cost—non the loss of all synthetic life, atomic number 3 in the final game's Demolish ending, but rather the Earth being wiped out in the explosion.
"And the paragon option," Wilkinson says, "was 'I'm so awesome I can take hold of these reapers and I'll wont them for the right reasons.' So and then you, Shepard, reversed into the big King Reaper. You still said 'fuck you' to the Queen." From there, it's pretty akin to the Keep in line ending, with Sam Shepard using the reapers for good.
The final examination pick was the Synthesis ending, but instead of existence the most touchy to obtain, and therefore coded as the 'foremost' option, it would be "the ending everybody could catch", with the others presumptively relying on how many paragon surgery renegade points you earned. As Wilkinson says, in this ending "the Queen regnant was like, 'We're gonna use space magic, and we're gonna combine the best parts of you and the best parts of me and we're gonna broadcast that bent on the universe and IT's gonna modify everything." Which sounds just as nonsensical arsenic the version we got.
Wilkinson doesn't mention whether these endings would involve the mass relays apparent to follow destroyed, or the Normandy crashing on a ergodic garden world that happens to be nearby, simply otherwise these endings broadly map to the ones the finished game had. Still, not having the AI that looks like a ghost kid and makes a weaksauce argument that synthetics and organics are doomed to never get along seems wish it would have gone downwardly at least a undersize better.
